Nigerian –born Dundalk girl - Gina Akpe-Moses won a victorious Gold medal for Ireland on Friday 21 July at

Grosseto 2017- Italy sprint championship in the 100 metres at the European Athletics Under-20 Championship. “I hoped to get a medal, and eventually the dream came true,” said Akpe-Moses. “In the semi-finals I started thinking I could jump on the podium, but only in the last 20m of the final I had the thought ‘I can get the gold medal.” Gina finished second in her heat yesterday which gave her grounds to make up on her rivals and crossed in a time of 11.71 leaving Germany’s Keshia Kwadwo at second position and Ingvild Meinseth of Norway came third, with Ireland’s Ciara Neville finishing seventh. The 18-year-old Akpe-Moses, runs with the Blackrock club, Dundalk Louth, It is said that it had been 38 years since Ireland had two sprinters in a championship final at this level.
